More reason to rejoice for the Indian automotive fraternity is that a Gurgaon-based auto component supplier, Sandhar Technologies has been selected to supply two wiper system parts for the Model 3.
“Production unit 1 of Model 3 is now built and going through final checkout,” was CEO, Tesla Motors, Elon Musk’s comment on twitter on July 8.More reason to rejoice for the Indian automotive fraternity is that a Gurgaon-based auto component supplier, Sandhar Technologies has been selected to supply two wiper system parts for the Model 3.This was revealed by Vinnie Mehta, director general of the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA) on twitter.
Sandhar will be supplying aluminium die-casting parts for the wiper systems to a Tier I supplier overseas who will assemble the final wiper system and forward them to Tesla, say sources in the know.Sandhar has been making aluminum die-casting parts indigenously for a long time and hence has a strong capability in it.
Recently, Sandhar had inked a joint venture with a South Korean company Daewha Fuel Pump Ind for making wiper blades, filters and fuel pumps and supplying them to OEMs.
Sandhar in 2007, had also set up a plant manufacturing highly technical aluminium pressure die casting parts of medium weight for vehicle restraint systems, windscreen wiper systems, anti-vibration systems and suspension systems in Spain.
It had taken over Tecfisa of Barcelona, Spain to form Sandhar Technologies Barcelona.
Sandhar Barcelona produces over 200,000 components per day. This could be one of the plants to supply the parts for the wiper systems.
Another option for Sandhar could be to manufacture the die cast parts in Mexico where it had set up Sandhar Technologies Mexico in February 2015.
The plant manufactures aluminium pressure die cast components; spools and spindles for vehicle restraint systems for the NAFTA Region.
Mexico still offers tax incentives to companies for manufacturing locally. Products produced here can be dispatched to other locations without additional taxes till now.
So it is quite likely that Sandhar uses the Mexican plant to produce the aluminium die cast parts and supplies them to a Tier I supplier in close proximity. It could be one of its joint venture partners or another global Tier I supplier who has a presence in India and is already its customer.
